Who Wants to End Up in a Nursing Home? NO ONE!

As a long-term care consultant for seniors and their families I have visited many different types of facilities. But my favorite type of facility to visit is adult family homes.

There are over 2200 adult family homes in Washington State. Adult family homes have many things in common, but are each unique in their individual decor’ and house size. Some are ultra fancy, some are tailored for country type folk, while some are modern and are bursting with color.

Each provider, like the differences you find in the decor of the homes is individual in their personalities. Some are laid back, others are very vivacious, you will find that some are calm, quiet houses, while others team with activity.

When you enter an adult family home the first thing you will notice is that the Adult family home smells wonderful. They take pride in making delicious homemade meals. Often times when you come into the homes you’ll be greeted by the aroma of fresh baked bread, rolls, or muffins, not to mention the varieties of home made soups, baked chicken, roasts or casseroles, whose fragrance fill the air.

Adult family homes do not have overwhelming chemical smells like nursing homes. They have a smaller ratio of clients to serve and clients are cared for in a much timelier manner, reducing odors.

Since caregiver ratio is much smaller than in traditional institutional settings. (The caregiver to client ratio is 1:5 or 1:6) This gives the caregiver and the client much more individualized time together. Careful personalized attention can be given to the individual senior living in this care setting. Bathing, dressing, putting on lotion and powders, not to mention the warmed up bathroom and the occasional dryer warmed towels, for the client are all done in a manner that preserves the seniors dignity. Often times I hear caregivers laughing with their residents while giving them a shower, I have even heard some singing.

Many seniors bring their furniture from home, pictures from their living room walls, bedspreads, photo albums, their own beds even. Having a piece of home with them helps them to feel more at home. I have been in several adult family homes that even paint the rooms the residents’ favorite color. Of coarse the amount of furniture you can bring depends on the size of the room.

Seniors don’t have to share rooms in adult family homes. But if they choose to do so, adult family home providers are careful to ensure that there is a good match with the roommate. If you prefer your own private bathroom some adult family homes offer those too.

Activities in the home are individualized to meet each senior’s preferences. Some seniors enjoy more activities and are encouraged to visit the senior centers, go on outings, attend church, or other social clubs, do light cooking and gardening. While other seniors enjoy a good book, watching TV, visiting with the caregivers (there is actually a lot of time for this) or just watching the birds through the kitchen window.

Caregivers have a chance to get to know each client’s individual tastes. If a client doesn’t particularly like roast beef, accommodations will be made. You don’t find nursing homes that will change a meal based on a single client’s wish. Many adult family homes have their residents help with the menu planning, so everyone gets to participate. Snacks are purchased with the specific individuals in mind. Each aspect of the care is tailored to the individual.

Perhaps the most important thing of all is that caregivers are with your loved one for more than just a shift. There is continuity of care. The person, who manages your loved ones care in the home, is more than likely the one who sleeps in the bedroom right next to them at night. The relationship becomes more personalized. Changes in the clients’ status are detected earlier, because a caregiver has taken time to notice. The staff turnover is very minimal. A senior feels more comfortable confiding health problems with a friend rather than a staff member that he doesn’t really know.

I could continue, because there are so many more things that make an adult family home a wonderful choice for long term care. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.

I hope this helps! Renee

How To Out The Fat!

Most of us are looking for easy ways to loose weight. Well, here today we will talk about how to do just that. It might not be as hard as you might think. We all have friends who pack on the double patty burgers with two extra large fries each day. After they swallow this, they will go onto eating a whole bag of candy and wash it down with a half gallon of milk. Sound like some of your college buddies? Through out the day, we get thirsty. All living creatures do. What do you turn for most often? Sodas, we all do it. Why? Because they are easy to get and they taste good. Who can turn down a sweet drink after a jog in the sun? Well, you shouldn’t be doing that. There is two reasons why. One is because it is wasted calories. You don’t get anything back from the soda. You might get some pep from the caffeine, but that is about it. You might get a slight sugar rush, but it won’t be anything that last. The second reason is, because we are slightly hungry. We aren’t hungry enough to go get something to eat, but a drink will satisfy us enough to our next meal.
Instead of drinking sodas all day long, drink juice. More specifically, juice with the pulp in it. I know what you are thinking. There is more of a purpose to this than moving your bowels. We all have had a bit of a problem in the bathroom department and have ran for the juice with the pulp in it. Juice with the pulp in it will fill you up. Unlike sodas, there is something actually there to curb your hunger. You will drink less because you will get full. Try it, you will be surprised.
Always stick to wheat bread. Don’t eat the white stuff. Whole wheat products are known to stabilize blood sugar levels. This mean you won’t get hungry as fast. This is an easy way to curb your hunger.
Here are some tips you can use when making sandwiches.
Avoid cheese. We put way to much cheese on everything these days. I won’t be surprised if some day they make a cheese covered soda can. This is a heart attack waiting to happen. There is no reason to eat this much cheese. One of the ways you can cut down on the amount of cheese you eat is by shredding the cheese. Use the shredded cheese instead of cheese slices. You can cover the same amount of area, with less cheese. You can also do this on salads as well.
Cut down on the mayo. I would suggest that you cut this completely out. I know some guys who put so much mayo on their sandwiches, I can’t see how they eat them. I can’t see how they can taste anything but the mayo. A good suggestion to do it, sprinkle a little of Italian dressing on the sandwich. Just enough so you can taste it. This will really cut down on the fat. Also, if you make your own, you can control how much oil is in the dressing.
Cut down on bread. If you are going out to eat and the waiter drops a bread basket on the table, push it away. Don’t eat the bread. The more carbs you can get away from the better. Cut out the silly snacks. Don’t fill up on potato chips between meals. Instead grab an apple or some veggie sticks. You will be amazed at how good they are once you give them a chance. I love green peppers sprinkled with a little salt. I will take these any day over potato chips.
Stay away from fatty cuts of meat. Don’t go to the store and buy the most fatty cuts of pork you can get. Take it home and trim the fat off of it if you have to. There are tons of ways you can cook lean meat so that it isn’t dry. That is why most people like the fat in the meat, it adds juice. Also with spices, you can fix the problem of not having the flavor that fat adds.
Stay away from too much dairy. No need to get full of ice cream that is full of fat. Instead if you must consume it, go for the low fat versions. Try to get flavors with a lot of fruit in them or add your own fruit. You won’t notice the missing fat if you add some flavor to it. Avoid frying stuff. Learn how to bake, broil and steam your foods. You will be surprised at how much fat frying adds to the dish. Sure it tastes better, but it won’t help your waist any.
There you have it. Those don’t sound too hard do they? I’m sure after you repeat them after awhile, they will get easy to do.

Cats, People, and the Black Plague: Those Who Kept Cats Survived

In the long history of human-animals relationships, a few episodes stand out in which one species has made a significant contribution to the survival of another. Rarely do cats get credit for such an accomplishment–more often dogs or horses, and then, usually in times of war–but the Black Plague of Europe is one of those times.

By way of background, the ancient Romans, in their conquest of Egypt, had brought cats home to Europe. Cats subsequently suffered a period of disfavor during the superstitious Middle Ages, for they had become associated with witches and the Devil; some people believed black cats were witches in disguise, or that they assisted witches in performing their craft. Those who kept cats as pets were the objects of much suspicion, and widespread cat hunting led almost to their extinction.

When rats from Asia brought the bubonic plague to Europe via trading ships in the mid-1300s, the epidemic (variously known as the Black Plague, the Great Plague, the Black Death, and the Great Mortality) swept across the continent, resulting in devastating loss of human life. In all, one-third of the population of Europe–some 34 million people–died. In England alone, more than half the human population perished; in some parts of France, ninety percent.

It took the authorities some time to figure out the cause of the problem. At one point they tested the theory that the disease was being spread by dogs and cats; thus the mayor of London ordered the execution of all such pets. Despite the extermination of millions of companion animals, however, the plague did not abate but actually accelerated, for, of course, the elimination of all cats was soon followed by an explosion of the rat population.

Eventually it became evident that people who had kept cats, in violation of the law, fared better; for the cats, according to their nature, killed the rats that carried the fleas that really carried the plague. People slowly began to deduce the rat-flea-disease connection. When the truth finally came to light, cats were quickly elevated to hero status, and soon became protected by law.

The Great Plague ended when the fleas started dying, as a part of their natural life cycle, in the cold of fall and winter. Subsequent plagues would visit Europe over successive generations, and other continents suffered similar outbreaks; it would not be until the 19th century that scientists really began to understand the epidemiology of the plague. Increased sanitary conditions over time helped reduce its incidence, and with the discovery of antibiotics in the 20th century, the threat of the plague was greatly reduced.

Would it be a stretch to say that, by bringing the rodent population under control, cats saved humans from extinction? At least, European humans? At a minimum, cats deserve credit for heroically saving the species that, through ignorance, almost wiped them out.

A Winning Motto: No APOLOGIES, No EXCUSES, No CONFESSIONS

Presenters say the darndest things…

- “I’m sorry but I have a cold today so my voice may sound a little funny.”

- “I just found out about this presentation yesterday, so I didn’t have as much time to prepare as I would have liked.”

- “I wanted to get copies of our reports, but couldn’t…”

- “I meant to bring…”

- “Oh, I should have told you about it earlier…”

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?

I call these APOLOGIES, EXCUSES, and CONFESSIONS. It is always surprising how often and how easily presenters use these kinds of NEGATIVE phrases in their presentations.

Up until now, that is.

If you want to WOW your audience, you have to adopt and live by the motto:
NO APOLOGIES, NO EXCUSES, NO CONFESSIONS.

I can tell you from experience, it isn’t easy to do–but it will serve you well in your business career.

Here’s why you should avoid these kinds of negative comments. When you APOLOGIZE, MAKE AN EXCUSE, or CONFESS at any time during your presentation, you are in essence saying to the audience, “Don’t expect a lot from me today because I’ll probably disappoint you.” It never fails to amaze me how many presenters do this before, and often many times throughout, their presentations.

DOING YOUR BEST MEANS NEVER HAVING TO SAY “I’M SORRY”

The kinds of APOLOGIES I often hear in presentations go something like this: “I apologize if you can’t hear me too well, but I have a cold today.” OR “I’m sorry I didn’t bring in a sample, but I couldn’t arrange it on such short notice.” OR EVEN “I’m sorry, I forgot to tell you that earlier in my presentation.”

The truth is, if you have a cold or don’t feel well, sooner or later the audience will figure it out and because you didn’t use it as an EXCUSE for why you might not perform well, they will respect you for your effort. I have given some of my best presentations when I wasn’t feeling 100%. I attribute it to the fact that I overcompensated by really being “on.” It is possible to perform well despite feeling poorly. And, at minimum, you owe it to your audience to try!

Instead of the statement “I’m sorry I didn’t bring in a sample, but I couldn’t arrange it on such short notice,” try framing it in the positive, “I am working on getting you a sample and I can deliver it next week.” Isn’t it just as easy to PROMISE, rather than APOLOGIZE?

As for the statement, “I’m sorry, I forgot to tell you that earlier,” my question is, why would you APOLOGIZE to the audience for forgetting something they had no idea you’d forgotten? If they think you’ve done it exactly as you were “supposed” to, what possible benefit do you receive from clueing them into your error? I advise you never to APOLOGIZE for making a mistake that the audience didn’t notice first.

In the presentation context, APOLOGIES are almost always unnecessary. NEVER APOLOGIZE for anything, except perhaps if you step on an audience member’s foot or if you have so much energy that your booming voice blasts in their ear. Even then, your APOLOGY should be framed positively… “I am sorry. I am so excited to be here, I nearly broke the microphone!”

“PARDON ME,” AND OTHER LAME EXCUSES YOU HATE TO HEAR

EXCUSES are things we say to eliminate the responsibility we have for our success (or lack there of it). Like APOLOGIES, EXCUSES tell your audience not to expect a lot from your presentation because you have very good reasons (i.e. the EXCUSE) for not being able to deliver.

“I just found out about this presentation yesterday so I didn’t have much time to prepare,” is a common and frankly, over used, EXCUSE. Other then telling the audience NOT to expect a lot from you because you aren’t prepared to deliver, what positive purpose does this EXCUSE serve?

Before you make another EXCUSE, remember what it feels like to be on the receiving end of someone else’s excuses. If that doesn’t stop you, I don’t know what will!

“FORGIVE ME FOR I HAVE SINNED” AND OTHER CONFESSIONS TO AVOID

The CONFESSION is what happens when the presenter tells the audience something they have no business knowing. My favorite confession goes something like this…

“I’m really nervous today.”

The CONFESSION “I’m really nervous today” lets the audience know right off the bat that you will probably be a disappointment because you aren’t a very good presenter. It’s our strange attempt to set the bar really low.

So why do we make the CONFESSION? CONFESSING your nervousness to your audience lets you off the hook for performing well! While the audience may chuckle politely at your CONFESSION, many audience members stop listening carefully because they know that you are probably too “nervous” to meet their needs.

NEVER CONFESS to the audience your nervousness and chances are, they will not know. Remember that while anxiety feels bad, the truth is, it rarely shows. In fact, while you are worrying about your anxiety, the audience is concentrating on your message and whether or not you are meeting their needs.

I challenge you to live by the vow, NO APOLOGIES, NO EXCUSSES, NO CONFESSIONS. Your audience will thank you!

Become an Affiliate Later Rather Than Sooner

I attended a presentation a couple of weeks ago given by Internet marketer, Michael Green. Michael runs the ‘How To Corp’ and has created numerous information products covering a wide range of topics.

There were a number of very interesting points that came out of the presentation but I wanted to ’steal’ one of them as the topic of this newsletter. I am sure Michael won’t mind :-)

The point in question is a simple one but one which is regularly overlooked by people just starting out in Internet marketing and that is to get into affiliate marketing later rather than sooner.

Many people jump at the chance of selling someone else’s product as an affiliate as there are many obvious advantages:

No need to create a product of your own
No involvement in the delivery or support of the product
Minimal contact with customers
No need to have your own website

At first glance, affiliate marketing can appear to be the ideal business opportunity and in many ways, it is. However, if you are new to Internet marketing and have no website, no email list and no traffic, affiliate marketing will almost certainly be a lot of hard work.

The key to being a successful affiliate is to be able to drive reasonable levels of traffic to a sales page that is relevant to the traffic in question. If you don’t have any existing traffic or a mailing list, the chances are that you are going to have to pay for this traffic (at least initially). Whilst this can be very effective, it can also take time to get right and will be costing money in the process.

Therefore, to go back to the original statement, getting involved in affiliate marketing is definitely a good idea but if you start to work as an affiliate once you have built up your own website, traffic and mailing list, you will find that it is far more rewarding.

To illustrate this further, when I first started writing this newsletter, I would often throw in the odd affiliate link but they rarely resulted in any sales. The reason for this was simple - I hardly had any subscribers on the mailing list! Over the years, as my list has grown and as subscribers have ‘got to know me’ and I have gained more trust, my affiliate sales have increased.

Looking at it from another angle, I find that my most successful affiliates are those that have an established website or mailing list. Of course, this makes perfect sense since there is already existing traffic to sell to and often no effort is required other than adding a hyperlink to a web page or giving a product a mention in mailshot.

Once you have an existing website and customers/subscribers, you will also start to build credibility in your chosen field/industry. This means that your customers are more likely to trust your recommendations and actually purchase something if you promote it as being a great product.

In the early days of my Internet marketing career, I would regularly try and promote products that were about making money online. I wasn’t very successful with these promotions and one of the main reasons was that I wasn’t personally making much money online. Once I started to become more successful and my customers/subscribers were able to see that I did actually know what I was talking about, they were far more willing to purchase these types of products from me or on my recommendation.

Therefore, in summary, get your own website/product/newsletter/whatever up and running first and then concentrate on adding additional value to your product range by promoting relevant affiliate products.

If you choose to go down the road of only selling products as an affiliate, remember that this is perfectly possible to do but it will take time, hard work and a fair bit of patience.

Of course, the other benefit in selling your own product is that you don’t have to share the sales proceeds :-)

Why Go Gold Panning?

Gold panning is a great outdoor activity that can be fun for
people of all ages and health. If you can walk slightly off the
beaten path, you can pan for gold. Despite the metal detectors,
sluice boxes, and other large equipment often associated with
this activity, the equipment actually needed to successfully pan
for gold is limited, affordable and light weight.

The Quest

The quest for gold is hardly a new thing. We all know of the
gold rush and have heard stories about the vast amounts of gold
that were found. While the large deposits of gold are not as
easy to find now, the total amount of gold available has not
decreased significantly. There is still plenty waiting — for
you.

It is estimated that only about 15% of the gold available was
found during the gold rush. There are approximately 1 billion
ounces of gold flowing through the streams in North America
right now.

What You Need To Know To Start

One nice thing about gold panning is that there really isn’t
much that you need to know in order to regularly find gold. The
necessary information to get started is fairly basic and any
good prospecting shop will have the answers for you.

Find out about the local laws on gold panning and claim staking.
Typically, it is legal for a person to pan gold anywhere that
they like, as long as they are only using a gold pan. Some
exceptions include native reserves and wild life reserves.
Landowners usually do not own streams that pass through their
land, but it is wise to seek permission in case of dogs or other
dangers. As a hobbyist you can even gold pan on a staked claim,
but the owner of the claim may become agitated and possibly ruin
your day — or worse.

Research the geology and history of the area where you are going
by talking to a prospecting store. If there is no gold in that
area, then there is no point in trying. However there may be
other valuables there, such as silver, platinum, or precious
stones that can be recovered.

Learn how gold flows along a stream. For example, gold often
stops moving when it hits slow moving water. Because of its
density, gold will quickly sink to the bottom of any dirt and
rock. This means that gold is usually found behind a rock in a
stream as the water eddies.

Get some basic training on how to gold pan. Gold panning isn’t
hard, but proper technique can mean the difference between
finding lots or just a little.

Learn to identify gold in your pan. Once you’ve seen it, there
is no mistaking it. Most prospecting stores have placer gold
flakes on hand and if you ask nicely enough, they may allow you
to put a flake in your pan along with some water and fine
gravel.

So what are you waiting for?

How much will I earn as a qualified paralegal?

Numerous people often wonder what the actual value of a paralegal degree is in today’s job market. With a Bachelor’s degree, you can expect to make up to sixty thousand dollars a year, working as a paralegal in a large city or for the federal government. This above average income is over half the income the average American makes.
The largest number of paralegals are employed by private law offices. That said, more insurance companies, corporations, banks, and real estate firms are beginning to employ paralegals as well. Choosing this career will allow you to pursue a large number of employment options.
Specialized paralegals who have focused their education on certain areas, like bankruptcy or product liability, will find that they have a plethora of jobs available to them.
The role of the paralegal continues to grow in the face of larger and ever more important tasks. Corporations want paralegals working in-house, creating a stable, long-term environment. They will not typically outsource their paralegal job opportunities to other nations.
As we’ve seen, the field of paralegals is most likely to expand into the private and public sector. Getting a Bachelor’s Degree online as a paralegal is well worth it; it is a great investment for the future. The field is expected to grow for the next decade, and more and more different types of businesses will need paralegals. This field is also somewhat insulated from outsourcing and minimally affected in a recession.

Make Money Online Free

Have you ever thought about how you could make money online free? Is it even possible to make money online free? Well, some would argue “no” you can’t, but I am here to tell you that what seems impossible for some is quite possible for others including you. Are you interested in finding out how? If so, read on and we’ll cover some of the basics on creating wealth through the internet.

Make money online free is a tantalizing proposition. It can seem impossible too. Thankfully, there is a company that is encouraging individuals to create great wealth and that company is Google. What’s more, Google is providing the tools you need to make money online free. No fees, no charges, nada. Just the time and effort you decide to put into the process.

The first step you want to take is to visit www.blogger.com which just so happens to be the blogging company owned by Google. Blogger is one of the largest sites on the internet and Blogger will help you make money online free if you elect to run Google AdSense ads on your blog.

Before you sign up, think of a category that will help you make money online free. Laptops is one, student loans is another. Simply start a blog based upon hot keywords, sign up with Google and before you know it the traffic to your site will be clicking on the ads and paying you.

Fortunately, you aren’t limited to only one blog. If you have the time, the energy, and the know-how, you can start up an entire blog network consisting of tens if not hundreds of blogs. Yes, you will have to keep them up, but no doubt you will and your sites will be well visited. Before you know it you will make money online free when your first check of $100 or more arrives from Google.

To further enhance your wealth, make certain that you email all of your friends and family members to tell them about your blog network. Invite them to participate, but do not tell them to click on the ads as that is a violation of Google’s Terms of Use. If your blogs are interesting, and you place your ads strategically on each one, you can expect regular clicks without much effort on your part.

Some bloggers are making a nice side income ranging from a few hundred dollars per month to well over $1,000 per week. You may not be able to quit you day job right off the bat, but you could conceivably get enough money to finance a car payment even the mortgage on a new house!

So, next time someone tells you that you can make money free online, remember what I have shared with you: yes you can. With a little sweat and much effort on your part, you can shake the internet tree and reap a nice monthly harvest.
