Whenever someone uses the word composer, inevitably, the names of Beethoven, Bach, and other classical personages come to mind. This can be very intimidating to those who want to record their musical thoughts and ideas down.

In fact, comparing yourself to ANY composer will be detrimental to you. Why? Because you will always have to live up to someone’s expectations of what is good music or what is not good music. This comparison trap will lead you nowhere and will result in a drying up of the creative spirit. The solution to this trap is to begin where you are and for most of us that means begin EASY!

I’ll never forget the first time I tried to “compose” something. It was for classical guitar. I tried to create something original and it took me 2 hours just to write out 4-bars of melody. Of course, I didn’t know what I was doing. There has to be some kind of method that works for you. Now, the method I use today has been very easy to work with because it gives me the freedom to compose AND improvise at the same time. I “compose” using 8-bar phrases.

To do this all one has to do is write out 8-bars on a sheet of paper. Any paper will do. It doesn’t have to be music paper or manuscript. In fact, I just use a spiral bound journal with ruled lines on it. Whenever I want to memorialize an idea, I draw out 8-bars very quickly. I then improvise and allow myself the freedom to play anything that comes out of me. If I try and think something up, the music will usually wind up sounding forced or contrived - qualities that music is better off not having.

Once the idea (either melodic or textural) appears, I write out the first 2-bars so I remember what it is and use chords to quickly fill in the 8-bar section. After this is completed, I may draw another 8-bars and see what else comes. If nothing more is coming at this particular point, I put the journal away and come back to it later on. This method has served me well over the years and is an excellent starting method for beginning composers.

Recruiting has changed significantly in the last 25 years. The primary vehicle of change has been the Internet. Other driving factors are business changes and technological changes not necessarily related to the Internet. I also think we have a different type of recruiter than we did even 10 years ago.

In today’s world it is all about speed and how quickly a company can adapt to change. The professionals sought by successful businesses need to be found quickly and they need to be productive almost overnight. This adaptation to almost instant productivity expected of a new employee requires a high degree of specialization to a very specific area of expertise. Therefore, the recruiter needs a very fast way of finding professionals with the exact type of skills. It wasn’t too long ago when an employer just needed an accountant with experience in the retail industry.

Today the employer needs an accountant with retail experience, plus experience in foreign markets, exchange rates, tariffs and knowledge of specific branded automated accounting systems.

There is no time to bring the new person up to speed.

So, the pieces of the big global economic engine are becoming more sophisticated, more minute, more specialized and more interchangeable.

Now I finally get to my point. What can I bring to the table via recruiting software that will give our recruiting customers the speed and accuracy they need to find or attract these people who are becoming more and more specialized into fewer macro groups and greater micro groups?

I have looked into my rather foggy crystal ball and saw that recruiting firms with an active functioning web site might be the way of the future. I am not talking about the web sites I see today which just simply talk about what a great recruiting firm they are and provide “x” number of reasons why they can help someone’s career. Some may even post jobs and accept applications and resumes via their web site. I see recruiting web sites of the future being content driven to areas of minute specialization; i.e. not just doctors but neurosurgeons specializing in spectrography, not just commercial pilots but helicopter pilots, not just web masters but web masters with PHP and video marketing.

For right know, let us simply call this web site for recruiters an exchange where candidates of very specific skills and needs are drawn. A key emphasis of the exchange is the ability to quickly isolate very specialized and specific skills. If I know my customer base, the exchange will have to be highly customizable for each recruiting firm. Both candidates and clients will have to have the ability to interact with their own information. A lot of the information will need to be confidential and highly secure. But above all, this one to one interaction between candidate and client will be monitored by the recruiter. Wow, has the recruiter’s job changed or what!

These web sites of the future will not simply be job boards like Monster, Career Builder or Dice. These exchanges will be run and operated by people with the knowledge of very specialized skills.

The biggest change I see coming however is the ability of recruiters to market and the means with which they market to their customers and candidates. Currently this marketing is typically in the form of newsletters, emails and phone calls. The recruiting firms of the future will learn how to market through their web sites via recruiting software. No longer will the recruiter be the “headhunter”. The recruiter of the future will need to draw these people of infinite specialties to them because they will not just be found.

Right now if a candidate was to search for a position with a specific skill in Google, I’m willing to bet that not one recruiting firm would come up on the 1st page. This will change as recruiting firms learn how to add value to their web site, not just in the form of bringing employer and employee together but by offering information valuable to the specific industry; salary, latest news, trends, continuing education, etc.

I believe above all else that there is one aspect of the recruiting industry that will not change. It will always be a cottage industry of firms averaging from 1 to 5 people. One to five people can never track the geometrical growth and infinite expansion of skills. The capitol required for recruiting startup is so small that no one recruiting firm can ever become a Google, Microsoft or Yahoo. It is too easy for a startup to out compete a giant conglomerate recruiting firm in a specific area with little or no capitol investment. It will be even easier with good recruiting software.

Meetings are out of control. They’ve been that way since my first job out of college when someone gave me a book called How to Make Meetings Work. When I could control it, I stuck to the following rules to ensure the meetings were effective.

Have a good reason for the meeting

Sounds obvious, but often overlooked especially where recurring meetings are concerned. Recurring meetings are taken for granted and no one bothers to revisit if there is a need to continue the meetings or to simply cancel a meeting when there is no need for it.

Franklin Roosevelt started many programs to help America recover from the depression. Some of those programs still existed many years after the fact when they’re no longer needed or fit the current economic environment. Some programs didn’t get cut until the 1980s through today.

Limit attendees

This good general management common sense. The more people you have, the longer it takes to come to a consensus on the action items, problems, and solutions.

For several years, I worked on a management team and it worked well as attendance was limited to specific managers. Then, two other groups joined our organization and we almost doubled our meeting participants. We fought to limit attendance for this specific meeting and lost. We didn’t accomplish as much as the smaller team and it took longer to get results.

I’ve seen managers and team leads attend every meeting there is known to the department even if one of their direct reports already attends. Delegate and trust. Let the direct report attend the meeting and report back. Use the freed up time for something else. It’s not a crime for a manager to attend less than 40 hours of meetings per week.

Imagine what would’ve happened to the Declaration of Independence had more than five people had sat on the committee? A committee of five drafted it with Thomas Jefferson doing most of the writing and presented to Continental Congress for approval.

Create an agenda and stick to it

Even if you have an impromptu meeting, quickly jot down the agenda so you can stay on track. It doesn’t have to be fancy or formal. Just list what you’re going to talk about and if possible, list how much time is available for each topic.

When a discussion gets lengthy, do what it takes to put an end to it otherwise the meeting runs over or the people who have the conference room reserved kick you out and your last agenda items get sacrificed. Typically lengthy discussions impact only some of the attendees. So agree to take the discussion offline (outside of the meeting). Make it an action item for them to meet and report the final decision.

Steer irrelevant discussions back on track

Enforce the previous rule and stick to the agenda. As a compromise, table the discussion for after all of the agenda items are covered. Make the last agenda item a free for all so attendees aren’t tempted to break the rhythm of the meeting with something not on the agenda.

Let’s get those meetings back in control and reclaim the extra time for other work.

Today we discuss escalation clauses because much of the country is experiencing an extreme “sellers’ market.” By that, I mean there are more buyers than there are sellers, and that results in sellers’ getting more than one offer to buy their property. The seller can be picky about the terms under which he is willing to sell. A potential buyer is apt to make one or more offers which are rejected before making a successful offer. If you are a buyer, how do you increase the chances that your offer will be the acceptable one?

The obvious things a buyer can do is to have a strong “pre-approval” lender letter, and make an offer that is full price and is as “clean” (has as few contingencies) as possible. Is there anything a buyer can do beyond that? You bet your bippy!

Escalation Clauses

A buyer who really wants to buy a property can do the above, plus add an “escalation clause.” An escalation clause simply states that the basic offer is full price, but if the seller receives one or more other offers at full price or higher before this offer is accepted, then this offer is increased by $500, $1,000, $5,000 (or whatever figure you choose) above the other acceptable offer. Of course, you choose the amount of the incremental increase based on what you think it’ll take to get the sellers’ attention given the original asking price of the home.

Now, I can hear you thinking, “That’s all very well. I can see where that’ll get me the winning bid, but how do I make sure there really is another contract? More importantly, how do I make sure I can afford the home? Isn’t this awfully open ended?”

Yes, it is. So let’s fine tune the escalation clause idea a bit.

First, make the escalation offer such that it will increase the sellers’ net proceeds (not gross proceeds) by $500, $1,000 or whatever. That way, your price is not artificially increased by a higher offer that includes a provision for the sellers to pay some of the costs that are normally born by the buyer.

Secondly, name an upper limit to which your offer can be carried. For example, your offer could state that you will pay the sellers an amount that will increase their net proceeds by $10,000 above any other acceptable offer up to a total price of $1,500,000. That puts a cap on how high you’re willing to go.

Prior to making an offer like this, be sure to have a conference with your lender to be sure you qualify for the highest amount required by your offer. Obviously, you also need to be sure you know and can pay the mortgage payments on that amount. It’s also a good idea to get a lender letter for this higher amount, so that the sellers will be confident you can do what your offer says you’re willing to do.

The third bit of fine tuning is to require that the seller provide you with a copy of the acceptable competing contract as signed by the other potential buyer. Make sure the “buyer” isn’t a relative of the seller! With the written offer on hand, you can be sure everything is on the up and up.

In this hot sellers market, escalation clauses can be the key to closing a deal on your dream home. If a seller is motivated by greed, you will have them dead to rights.
