A Simple Factsheet on B.tox

Botulinum therapy (shortened to Botox) is rapidly becoming ingrained amongst Sydney’s stylish crowd and has become an essential part of grooming for some people in Sydney.

All the same I am always startled by the insane urban legends surrounding the procedure. Here I have listed a few of the common stories which we encounter day in day out in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I am employed as a physician.

Mistake no. 1: The muscles in my face will stiffen up!

Under the skin of the face are 60 or so muscles. The excessive use of these muscles over a period of time may result in the formation of wrinkles. When surplus Botox has been employed the muscles of the face can become over relaxed. The dose used by almost all physicians result in you appearing less tired, but still you will of course maintain your normal expression.

By injecting conservative amounts of the toxin in just the right areas one should achieve a softening of the fine lines and wrinkles without compromising facial expression.

Mistake no. 2: Botox is toxic!
This to some extent is correct. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact medical nomenclature. Too large a quantity can relax muscles that you do not want relaxed or may make you really ill.

But to put things into perspective - a famous chemist’s saying is that ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. A large dosage of any drug can cause sickness. Even water can be a poison if enough is taken.

Mistake no. 3: Botox hurts!
In our clinic Star Cosmetic Medicine the physician only uses hypodermic needles smaller than a hair. Several people compare the treatments to a mosquito bite. Definitely not in the same league as compared to having a regular shot.

Mistake no. 4: My face will be less sensitive!
Not true. Botox affects the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on sensate nerves. Only the ability to relax your muscles is affected by Botox injections.

Mistake no. 5. Once you start Botox you need to keep it up otherwise you will age quicker than ever!
Also wrong.

The first treatment lasts approximately 3 months. Further injections tend to last a little longer. Gradually as muscle strength returns to normal - the wrinkles will eventually re-emerge. But they will certainly be no deeper than before.

Even if you never had Botox injections ever again - those lines should be smoother than if you had not undergone the treatment. This is chiefly so due to the fact your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
