An Unexpected Freezer Outage Can Be Very Costly

Has your house lost power? Did you fridge break overnight? Are you concerned about the food that was in your freezer being okay?

Relax ,in that case you can use some easy tips for handling food safely.

Through the food away when it is thawed or warmed to room temperature. Discard it if it has been out of the refrigerator for over two hours.

If the food has thawed out, but is still cold, it is safest to cook it right away. Once cooked, food can be refrigerated for later or eaten right away.

If the food still has ice crystals on it, you may refreeze it. If you don’t have a freezer to put it in, make sure to get some dry ice and put it in a cooler. These items will need to be cooked, because your freezer will not offer the same longevity that a normal freezer would offer.

If you notice any food with even a little freezer burn, you need to throw it away.

It’s not possible to prevent the occurrence of unexpected power interruptions due to weather or accidents, but it is possible to react properly in such cases.
If your current refrigerator or freezer isn’t working like it should, your best bet is to purchase a new one. A new American Style fridge freezer is a great option if you have the amount of space needed. Any kitchen will be much better by having this. A variety of American refrigerators and freezers from many suppliers are listed on this site.

Take A Break From Tradition: Unique Gifts You Can Afford

Finding unique gifts for family and friends can be a challenge for even the most seasoned shopper. Throw in a dash of holiday madness, mass broadcast advertising and several pounds of flyers in your mailbox, and your head might be full of this year’s newest must-have, but not particularly unique gifts. To make an impression, however, toss aside the traditional gift ideas that everyone will be giving and receiving and focus on finding unique gifts that reflect the interests and personality of your gift recipient.

When looking for ideas for unique gifts, think about the person who will be receiving your present. What does he or she like to do for hobbies? Do you know his favorite color or her taste in music or clothing? What does this person need? Is he or she facing any major transitions in the immediate future? Creating an informal profile will help you come up with unique gifts to suit each person on your list.

For example, if you are searching for unique gifts for your wife, take a look in her closet. What colors and styles do you see there? Perhaps you could borrow an outfit or two and take them to a jeweller as inspiration for a piece of custom jewellery like a set of one-of-a-kind earrings made to match her favorite dress. Talk about unique gifts!

A new college student might appreciate unique gifts centered on a school theme, such as a gift certificate to a local furniture or book store, a compilation of his or her favorite songs or perhaps a collage of family photographs or a painting of a loved pet to help decorate a dorm room.

Depending on what you choose, unique gifts don’t have to be pricy gifts. Some of the most cherished and unique gifts are those that are handmade. Consider some of the following:

Unique gifts you can make:

• Scrapbooks - these can be as playful or as elegant as your imagination, and are a great way to store and present photos.

• Ornaments - delightful ornaments for Christmas and other occasions can be crafted with only a minimum of resources. Use common materials such as beads, wire and glue to create lovely and memorable pieces.

• Clothing & accessories - if you can sew, knit, or crochet, the possibilities for unique gifts are endless: using simple patterns, beginners can make hats, scarves, mittens, handbags, skirts, jackets and more.

• Stories, songs and artwork - if you’re a gifted writer, musician or artist it would be a shame not to turn your talents into unique gifts that family members and friends are sure to cherish, so be creative!

If you aren’t the hands-on type, you can also purchase unique gifts throughout the year. Keep others in mind as you browse through craft markets, auction sales or artisans’ fairs, and if you find something wonderful, tuck it away until the next birthday, Christmas, anniversary or other event. Your thoughtfulness will be appreciated, and everyone will be wondering how just you find such perfect and unique gifts.

Why Go Gold Panning?

Gold panning is a great outdoor activity that can be fun for
people of all ages and health. If you can walk slightly off the
beaten path, you can pan for gold. Despite the metal detectors,
sluice boxes, and other large equipment often associated with
this activity, the equipment actually needed to successfully pan
for gold is limited, affordable and light weight.

The Quest

The quest for gold is hardly a new thing. We all know of the
gold rush and have heard stories about the vast amounts of gold
that were found. While the large deposits of gold are not as
easy to find now, the total amount of gold available has not
decreased significantly. There is still plenty waiting — for
you.

It is estimated that only about 15% of the gold available was
found during the gold rush. There are approximately 1 billion
ounces of gold flowing through the streams in North America
right now.

What You Need To Know To Start

One nice thing about gold panning is that there really isn’t
much that you need to know in order to regularly find gold. The
necessary information to get started is fairly basic and any
good prospecting shop will have the answers for you.

Find out about the local laws on gold panning and claim staking.
Typically, it is legal for a person to pan gold anywhere that
they like, as long as they are only using a gold pan. Some
exceptions include native reserves and wild life reserves.
Landowners usually do not own streams that pass through their
land, but it is wise to seek permission in case of dogs or other
dangers. As a hobbyist you can even gold pan on a staked claim,
but the owner of the claim may become agitated and possibly ruin
your day — or worse.

Research the geology and history of the area where you are going
by talking to a prospecting store. If there is no gold in that
area, then there is no point in trying. However there may be
other valuables there, such as silver, platinum, or precious
stones that can be recovered.

Learn how gold flows along a stream. For example, gold often
stops moving when it hits slow moving water. Because of its
density, gold will quickly sink to the bottom of any dirt and
rock. This means that gold is usually found behind a rock in a
stream as the water eddies.

Get some basic training on how to gold pan. Gold panning isn’t
hard, but proper technique can mean the difference between
finding lots or just a little.

Learn to identify gold in your pan. Once you’ve seen it, there
is no mistaking it. Most prospecting stores have placer gold
flakes on hand and if you ask nicely enough, they may allow you
to put a flake in your pan along with some water and fine
gravel.

So what are you waiting for?

Having It All: A Mother’s Thoughts About Balance

I am an 80s child. My teenage years were spent in the midst of
the Cold War, punk rock, and hair-sprayed hair. I was lucky
enough to have parents who raised me to believe that I could
accomplish anything I wanted if I worked hard enough. I was
unlucky enough to spend my formative years brainwashed into
thinking that I could “have it all.”

I imagined myself one day adeptly juggling kids (who were
perfect), a home (that was also perfect), and a career (at which
I was perfect). No one told me–or the thousands of girls like
me–that “having it all” often means sacrificing things along
the way. “Having it all” does not leave room for “perfection”
because it means cramming as much into every second of every day
as possible. “Having it all” means cutting corners whenever
possible because 24 hours does not leave room for everything a
working mother must do in a given day.

After 13 years of marriage and 10 1/2 years of motherhood, I
have juggled children, a home, and a career. Notice the
deliberate absence of the adverb “successfully” between “have”
and “juggled.” But I suppose success is a relative term.

My kids are not perfect, but they are not bullies, they have
nice friends, and they do well in school (despite my fears that
they do not read enough). My home is not perfect, but it is
clean (if not as organized as I would like). My career, which
has changed several times during my adult life, is certainly not
perfect and always seems to interfere with my expectations for
myself as a mother.

I suppose I now mark my success with my children’s mile stones:
I was supremely proud, thrilled (and relieved) when my oldest
son told me that he liked the book Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer’s Stone better than the movie of the same name. I was
also thrilled when the same child received a rather long book
for Christmas last year, read the whole thing, and liked it! My
middle child recently took on the challenge of reading a book
that was probably somewhat above his reading level, determined
that he could read and understand it. (Notice the trend.)

Every time I think I have shed my 80s sensibilities regarding
work and motherhood, some insidious thought pops into my
consciousness. While I am supremely proud of my children and
their accomplishments (and still guilt ridden that I do not do
more with them in an educational sense), I am still looking for
the perfect career.

My earliest career attempts involved writing and editing in the
business world. There was not a lot of fulfillment, and I did
not spend as much time with my family as I wanted. I also did
not have time to cook pretty meals and keep my house up to snuff
(at least my snuff). (Has anyone mentioned high/out-of-reach
standards?)

The birth of my first child spawned an interest in education,
and the birth of my second child became the impetus to seek out
a career in the field. I went back to school, and two years
later, I emerged with a teaching certificate and a Master’s
degree in education. I actually thought that being a teacher
would “simplify” my life. The joke was on me. It was the hardest
– and second most fulfilling — thing I have ever done. I was
good at teaching and I loved it. A lot of teenagers write a lot
better because they spent time in my classroom; I am very proud
of that. However, it was also exhausting. I could easily have
worked 60 hour plus weeks (and sometimes did). Classrooms are
just too full. Imagine grading 140 essays that take 15 to 20
minutes each several times each quarter in addition to all of
the other grading and prep work.

My children would not have recognized a home cooked meal if they
did not encounter them at their grandparents’ homes. The laundry
was piled high (clean and dirty), and I had weeds in my flower
garden. I thought I was going to die the first year my oldest
child brought homework home. Factor in the newest trends in
education that tell teachers that everything they’ve been doing
is wrong and the politicians who think they know best (even
though their last classroom experiences were as students), and
you have a profession that can swallow you alive. As I said, I
loved teaching, but I hated the politics of public education.

Five years (and one more child) later, brings me to my keyboard
and this moment. I am still searching for a career that provides
not only income, family time, and fulfillment, but one that
makes me feel successful, as if I have realized that
unattainable dream. It seems that I cannot totally escape my
desire to “have it all” even though common sense dictates
otherwise.

Get the perfect exposure… every time!

Did you ever get back a fresh batch of film, only to be
disappointed in finding out that you got back wash-out boring
images.

The problem is that you didn’t expose your film properly.

Whether we use a digital or film camera, we need to be able to
calculate exposure properly. But first, we need to understand
how the aperture and the shutter work together. We also need to
know how film handles light, and the relationship between film
light sensitivity and f/stops.

Lets take a quick look at the main elements.

Aperture and f/stops: the aperture is an opening in the centre
of the lens through which light passes. The amount of light
which passes through an aperture is indicated by f/stops. The
lower the f/stop the more light that passes through the
aperture. Opening up one full f/stop doubles the amount of light
entering the camera. F/4 admits twice the light of f5.6.

Shutter: the shutter is a mechanical device that controls the
length of time that light is allowed to act on the film. Each
time you open the shutter by one, we double the light, when we
close down the light by one we half the light. Opening the
shutter at 1 second allows twice the light as that of a second.

ISO (ASA): stands for International Standards Organisation. The
initials are used for film speed which rates light sensitivity.
A film with an ISO number 100 is twice as light sensitive as a
film with an ISO of 50. The faster the film, the more sensitive
it is to light.

Most digital SLR have ISO settings built in to them. If you are
taking a low light image with a digital camera use a slow ISO
rating of 200 or upwards.

Getting the perfect exposure isn’t easy, but there are several
different ways of making it easier.

Using a light meter: there are two types of light meters,

1. Reflected-light meter (the same that is built into your
camera) works by pointing the meter at your subject.

2. Incident-light meter: instead of pointing the meter at your
subject, you stand beside the subject and point the meter at the
camera. The light that falls on your subject will also fall on
your meter.

The most common way is to use the meter built into your camera.
All modern day cameras have a reflected-light meter built in to
them. But don’t point the camera directly at your subject from
10 meters. This will more than likely underexpose your image.
Take the exposure reading up-close, then return to the starting
position and take your image.

It doesn’t matter which metering system we use, if we don’t
point them in the right direction our images will return too
dark or too bright. The key is to know where to point the meter.

When I take a landscape image I normally take five or six
different readings. I take an incident-light reading with my
light meter to record the foreground and a reflected-light
reading of the sky.

If you are unsure take three or four images at different
exposure settings. Don’t let a perfect picture moment pass by
without recording it flawlessly.

Jealousy In Relationships

This is a common theme that is discussed by those who are in
love, or by their friends. Why does one feel jealous? Is the
relationship weak? If the relationship is strong, should one
feel jealous at all? Or it is one’s genes? I mean, if I am very
sure that I love a girl and I am totally committed to her, and I
believe that she is equally in love with me, why should I feel
jealous? Or why should she feel jealous? But jealousy is a fact
of life. Let us examine more of jealousy.

Let us take a simple example. Say, your child loves one of your
neighbors and she is equally attentive to him/her. Would you
feel jealous of that or proud about that? Would you try to take
away your child from the neighbor? Would you confront the
neighbor? You may do nothing like this, if I am not wrong in my
analysis. But what if your child is replaced by your
spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend? Your reaction may be entirely
different. If yes, why? What is the difference in both the
situations? Our reactions change like the changing seasons. Our emotions can be driven as easily as the
these autumn leaves.

The main difference is faith. You have total faith that your
child may run around and play with many people around the day.
But he/she will return to you at night, or if hungry, or if
injured? Am I correct? You don’t have the same faith with your
lover/spouse. And that is the main cause of jealousy. Somewhere
in your mind, you are always wondering about your looks, your
intelligence, your relationship skills and all other factors
that may break your relationship and make your spouse/lover go
into another relationship.

Can any relationship that is based on such slippery thoughts be
a happy relationship? Can it survive long without problems? No.
The best way out is to discuss without hesitation everything in
your mind with your spouse/lover and expose all your fears. Be
totally open. Try to find out all that is in the mind of your
partner in the same way. Discuss everything and decide that come
what may, your relationship is here to stay. Give that
commitment and take that commitment in return. And enjoy life
forever without bothering about jealousy. If after all the
discussion, both of you come to a conclusion that the commitment
is not strong for each other, make a clean break. We cannot sail
in a boat in the deep seas, and try to enjoy sailing, while
constantly getting worried about the sea worthiness of the boat.
Am I correct? We should begin sailing only after making sure
about the boat first. Jealousy mainly comes in our mind because
we are not sure of the love and commitment. Take care of that to
live a happy life.
