A Silent Broker in Web Development

It can get a little overwhelming as a designer or developer to attempt to handle every aspect of a new website. Case in point is when you’re freelancing and have a number of clients with a desire for similar deadlines. Sometimes all you want to do is find someone who can lighten your workload, but it’s difficult. Believe me, when things are stressful you definitely want the added help, but the thought of losing money on the deal only intensifies your stress level. A website service that will allow you to take advantage of broker web development seems almost too ideal to be true, but it’s real and ready to help. It’s web design and development as the most functional duo it was mean to be. How designers in need of additional development support ever got before is a mystery to me.

Gone are the days where bringing in a new party to get the job done takes further approval from the client. There’s even a profit available in a markup. The client gets what they want quicker, and as a designer I’m allowed take on more clients with the least amount of worry. At which point the only real issue would be keeping the clients coming in which is hardly a problem.

Who will host me?

When you decide that the time is right to get a website online,
one of the first things you will require is a web hosting
company. Alongside the design and marketing aspect, your web
host is probably the most important factor to consider. Of
course if you are just wishing to host a small, fun website,
dedicated to telling the world a little about yourself, then a
free web hosting company would suffice. If, on the other hand,
you are interested in a more serious aspect, you will have a
multitude of web hosting companies to choose from, all offering
different items in their packages, that may well overwhelm you
and at the least, confuse you!

All set hosting plans come with details of what you will be
getting for your money. These will include things like
bandwidth, which is a measure of how much ‘information’ is sent
and received between the server, where your website will be
hosted, and the viewer or visitor. This is measured in Megabytes
(MB) or Gigabytes (GB). Basically, the more your website has on
it, like photographs and graphics, the more bandwidth is used to
show the web site to the visitor.

You will also be told how much space you will be allocated on
the server for storing your website files. Again this will vary
from the average of 500MB up to some quite large numbers. If you
only wish to have a few small pages online, then 500MB would be
more than enough space. A shop or ecommerce solution website
would require far more.

Another factor to consider will be email addresses and whether
you will get domain email addresses. These are addresses you can
use such as webmaster@yourdomain.com. a great plus if you are
setting up a business as it gives a far more professional look
to your enterprise. If your new hosting plan allows unlimited
web or domain email addresses you can give every member of your
staff their own private email address, and make it easier for a
customer or prospective customer, to contact the right person,
directly. The other benefit of web or domain email accounts is
that it can be accessed via a POP3 mail client such as Outlook,
Outlook Express, Thunderbird etc.

One very important thing you should consider, is whether there
is FTP (File Transfer Protocol), and how it is implemented. You
may be only able to access your web space to transfer files via
the control panel after logging into it through your web browser
or you may be able to use any third party FTP client software.
The latter is the preferred method as you have more control over
the files and folders and can do more advanced things like
CHMODing the files if files like CGI scripts are going to be
used.

Subdomains are another item to look out for. Subdomains allow
you to create a ‘mini site’ but using your original domain name
in the title. You can use it for a specific area of your main
website. for example, a website about do it yourself, called
http://www.doityourself.com, could have ‘mini sites’ called
wallpaper, painting and flooring, which would be on the sub
domains http://wallpaper.doityourself.com,
http://painting.doityourself.com and
http://flooring.doityourself.com. As you can see, subdomains
create attractive, new mini sites using the main domain name and
can be a lot easier to remember the some obscure page on your
main site.

MySQL databases often get included in a web hosting plan, These
are required for some more advanced scripts. If you know about
installing scripts, you will know if you need these or not and
if you are going to have enough! If you are getting another
person or company to install a script for you, then they will
advise on whether you require databases or not.

All these things only barely touch on what a web host can offer
you. the easiest method for choosing a web host is to take
advantage of their support system. This should be free and
accessible to all users and prospective clients as well. ASK the
web host what they recommend and WHY they recommend that.
EXPLAIN to the web host what your plans for your website is,
whether you plan to expand or not and ask the host if they are
flexible enough to add items as you require them, like extra
room, bandwidth etc. A good web host will gladly take the time
to answer you and assist you in your choice, after all a web
host wants their customer to be happy!

Web Hosting For Internet Marketers

Anybody researching the internet for web hosting services will
find an abundance of hosting providers to choose from along with
a multitude of plans available. You’ll also discover that the
majority of providers will offer many of the same plan features.
However, there are some hosting companies that offer additional
tools directed towards internet marketers and the home business
industry.

Even for experienced internet marketers, with the variety of
companies and plans available, it’s not always easy to determine
which web hosting service will best meet his or her specific
business needs. With so many options, how do you know which
hosting provider is best suited for you and your business?

One thing for certain is that whatever you decide, do not make
the mistake of basing your decision on the price of hosting
alone. One thing that has been substantiated time and time again
is the old adage “you get what you pay for.” Well, this also
applies to web hosting!

If you’re an internet marketer or own an internet home business,
listed below are some common features you should be looking for
in a web hosting package. Of course, it will be easy to find
providers that offer more that what’s listed here (e.g. 1,000 MB
of disk space, unlimited sub-domains, unlimited emails, etc),
not to mention a number of additional features, so keep in mind
that these benchmarks only represent a few of the minimum
requirements:

- 300+ MB of Disk Space - 10 GB or more of Monthly Bandwidth -
50+ Email Accounts - 20+ Sub-domains - CGI-Bin - 3+ MySQL
Databases

In addition to these common features, there are some web hosting
companies that cater to internet marketers and home business
entrepreneurs by offering useful marketing tools as part of
their hosting package. As you probably know, having access to
in-demand marketing tools is a key ingredient in becoming
successful on the internet. Some of the tools I’m referring to
include:

- Unlimited Follow-up Autoresponders - Resalable E-Book
Collections - FFA Leads - Lead Capture Systems - Ad Tracking -
Shopping Carts - Scripts - Affiliate Programs and Commissions

These tools are a great benefit to both new and experienced
internet marketers. But, in addition to the tools, another very
important difference I’ve found with these types of providers is
their exceptional level of customer support. Whether it’s
assisting with the installation of a script, a problem copying
files to the server, or responding to a general question, the
support staff tend to be very knowledgeable and can be contacted
around the clock either via telephone, live chat or email.

Compared to some web hosting services, you may notice the cost
of these plans to be slightly higher because of the extra
marketing tools and the quality of customer support provided.
However, with the growing popularity of internet marketing and
the ever increasing number of new home businesses popping up on
the internet, these providers can definitely give you an
advantage over your competition. And, if you choose a provider
that offers an affiliate program, you could even end up with
free web hosting and a profit to boot!

Are You a American Web Page Inventor?

I’ve been watching the American Inventor lately and boy-howdy can you get some useful tips about marketing and presentation! If you haven’t seen the show, here’s a quick overview: The inventors get a 60 second shot at presenting their product to a panel of 4 Entrepreneurs, each are marketers and interested in promoting a new product. What’s at stake? A million dollars! And a chance to become famous!

What’s interesting about this process is that the judges ‘tell you’ that the ‘inventor’ (you)…how you present your case, even if your product is bad, is equally important to their decision when choosing a new inventor. NOT ONE INVENTOR HEARD THAT MESSAGE. Each person is so embedded, so over-focused in their own product, they aren’t paying attention to advice the panel just offered about what the panel wants to see, and as a result most seriously bomb because they design a presentation ‘they think’ the panel wants to see! As a result they can’t ‘convert’ the panel of judges to buy in on their idea!

The same thing happens with web page designs. Sites fail because they don’t pay close attention to the customers will want. We tend to build what WE think our customers want instead of researching exactly what they want. On the show the inventor gets 60 seconds to sell the panel on their product…a web page gets 2 seconds! Your challenge is far greater than the inventor. Where on the page do you think you’ll be able to grab someone’s attention and keep them focused on YOUR presentation? The headline…simply put. You see, ‘words’ sell not logos, or funny objects….words. Yes…I know you want to brand yourself…great go ahead and brand yourself, but listen up…branding doesn’t convert…read on.

The message should speak to your customer in a way that keeps them on your page as they continue to read your proposition. It doesn’t matter how great or poor your product is…if you instantly speak to your customer and provide them with what they want…they will most likely buy. Remember, people don’t buy because they need, they buy because the want, it’s up to you to create that emotional connection and convince them to want your product.

Here’s an exercise: Take a moment, step back and take a look at your pages and ask yourself: “do my headlines keep me on this page? Does this page compel me to buy?” If the answer is no…then you know what to do next, find a good copywriter that knows how to write pages that sell, don’t go to your web designer who knows nothing about writing copy, these are two distinctively different skills and you want to work with the one that will best suit your objectives.

Good Communication Promotes Positive Feedback On Ebay

Good communication is the key to encouraging your auction buyers
to leave you positive feedback. Such communication also helps
avoid most negative feedback on eBay.

1. Good Communication Prevents Misunderstandings

Good communication helps to avoid misunderstandings. For
example, if surface shipping takes six to eight weeks but the
customer doesn’t know this, he may expect almost immediate
delivery. When such quick delivery doesn’t materialize, he may
feel that he has been cheated or that your service is slow and
poor.

Thus, try to spell out delivery time frames and other details as
much as possible. Is your refund policy clear? Is your product
clearly and accurately described in your auction ad? Does your
product’s quality meet or exceed the expectations created by
your auction ad?

2. Prompt E-mail Response

If, for whatever reason, your e-mail response is slow, the
customer may assume that you aren’t delivering on your promises.
Prompt e-mail communication can help reassure the customer and
gives evidence of good customer service.

3. Encourage Queries

Basically, state in your auctions: “If you have any questions
about this auction, please e-mail me.” If a person is expecting
instant delivery of an e-book but instead you send him the
information via the postal service, he might be disappointed.
Nip all such problems in the bud by encouraging your prospective
buyers to ask questions.

4. Ask for Positive Feedback

How can you encourage buyers to leave positive feedback for
you? Simply state that you’ll leave positive feedback for them
after you’ve received theirs.

Since they are leaving the feedback first, they will hesitate to
leave you negative feedback, knowing that you may respond in
kind. If you leave positive feedback for the buyer first, they
may never return the favour.

5. Reversing Negative Feedback

With good communication, you can often avoid receiving negative
feedback. Try to do everything that is reasonable to make your
customer happy.

However, what if you do receive negative feedback on one of your
auctions? What can you do about it?

Under certain, very limited circumstances (such as an extortion
attempt), eBay might reverse negative feedback unjustly given to
you. In most cases, however, eBay will not reverse negative
feedback.

You can use eBay’s “Mutual Feedback Withdrawal” procedure. This
is where both the buyer and seller agree to withdraw negative
feedback from each other. Thus, the negative feedback will be
removed from both of your total scores (thus improving both
feedback ratings).

The negative comments themselves won’t be removed by eBay.
However, your comments left in response to a negative feedback
will also stay to tell your side of the story.

Yes, good communication can lead to more positive feedback from
your auctions. Such communication can also help you to avoid and
even reverse negative feedback. So, by all means, promote
positive feedback on eBay through good communication.
